I like to buy my spices in bulk from sources I trust. It is so much cheaper (I cook with a ton of spices) and I don't want my spices irradiated. After years of having to open a jar to find out what is in it, and after trying to thicken a sweet and sour dish with cream of tarter instead of arrow root, I decided labeling them would be good. So my husband sandblasted the names of the spices on jars for me. I love it. They look so cute in my cupboards. We have given them away as gifts because we like them so well. Sara at Red Acre Farms saw them and is having me put their name on jars for the new year. I will post them when I get them done. They are cute.

Years come and go. Every year I think, I'm going to keep a garden journal and the years keep coming and going and I haven't done it yet. Every year I wish I had recorded when the first or last freeze was, when I planted my peas, when I lots what fruit, where I planted my beans last year and on and on. So, this year, 2013, I'm going to keep a garden journal. I am so excited about the new things I am going to try in my garden this year. Last spring I added a green house. In the fall I built five low tunnels (which I recommend everyone do) and they are full of winter crops that I have harvested through December, and plan to harvest all winter.
12/21/12 Snows are hear to stay. My tunnels are snowed in and it looks like it will be a while before I get into them again. Not that there isn't anything to harvest, but the plastic is frozen to the ground. I'll wait to get in to harvest until we have a thaw. They have proven very sturdy and although I wish I had tightened the plastic down after my last harvest, they have weathered all the winter storms well.
12/28/12 I have been searching seed catalogs to choose varieties to plant. I am going to have a Monsanto free garden this year. In my greenhouse I am going to try planting sweet potatoes. I am in zone 5 and no one I know has ever been successful at growing them. I am hoping that by planting them early enough they will have a sufficient season to produce here. So the first of April I will harvest all the lettuce and onions currently residing there and plant sweet potatoes in one half and broccoli in the other. Not that broccoli needs the heat, it doesn't like it at all, but I have such a problem with aphids, I'm hoping to avoid them in the greenhouse. We'll see.
