The Power of Specific Goals
In 2013, Dan and I got together with amazing friends and decided to make it an incredible year. We set goals with the idea of helping each other reach them. I set 10 rather lofty goals. I don't recommend setting so many, I haven't before or since set so many. However, that year was incredible. I reached all of them, even the ones I wasn't sure about when I set them. One of my goals was to figure out how to freeze dry food. I didn't know what a crazy goal that was. Freeze drying is really complicated. The first home freeze dryer happened to come out that same year, and somehow, we acquired one. I didn't know anything about Harvest Right when I set that goal. I didn't even know much about freeze drying, I just knew I wanted to be able to do it!
This year, I set some lofty, quirky, and random goals as well. I shared them with Dan so I would be more accountable. I wanted to loose 15 pounds, be able to climb a rope, swim a mile, and do 2 pull ups. That tells you how out of shape I was. The first few months didn't go well. I tried intermittent fasting, and didn't loose a pound. I started swimming and was enjoying it, but I had to swim 100 yard intervals. I heard Sally Fallon speak in January, and recommitted to following her ideas: bone broth, high quality fish oils, healthy fats, no processed foods...
Then in the middle of march our water polo coach introduced us to some amazing super food supplements. I started to be able to do things I couldn't before and it started this crazy domino effect. I lost 6 pounds, started running 3 miles day, could swim 2000 yards without stopping, and felt so much stronger. Then just when I'm feeling good about how things are going I learned about an arial silks class for adults. I didn't know when I set the goal to be able to climb a rope where in the world I was going to be able to do that. Well, there we go! I learned just how weak I was the first day! But, I will get there. I am confident that I can do it.
Goals I had set last year but didn't accomplish have even started happening: massage therapy school. This is opening even more doors for health and wellness for my whole family. I am amazed at the power of setting goals and sharing them with people to hold you accountable. I can honestly say that it has not been me that is accomplishing these things. It is as if Heaven and Earth have moved to bring them about. All I have to do is be a willing participant. This year hasn't been the easiest of years in many ways. We have had a few set backs. But the goals I made will be accomplished. I am so grateful! What is the difference? I don't totally know the answer this this except there must be a natural law that very specific goals, shared with others for accountability set things in motion. I look forward to the rest of this year and the changes I will make.
